Because we still had some time left and because of Pattaya's reputation we wanted to check it out for ourselves. So we left Ko Samet by speedboat and Ban Phe by minivan and arrived in Pattaya. We walked on the beach and the main boulevard and had to conclude that the lion's share of the people there present are old white guys and young Thai chicks. They're really everywhere: on the beach, in the restaurants, the shopping centers and at night in the bars of course. After half a day we had seen enough of this and returned to Bangkok to do some shopping, foot massage (pronounced as 'massaaaaaa') and the best street food. At night we accidentally ran into Vincent, a Dutch guy who trained with me for a while at Chin Lung...

Pattaya's mayhem
From Bangkok's Chinatown to Ko Samet
To spend the ladies' last day we returned to Bangkok, I picked up Meri at Suvarnabhumi and we visited Chinatown and Lumphini park. Chinese new year is clearly being prepared already: the white rabbits are omnipresent. When a taxi took us back in the evening, we ended up in one of the political demonstrations of the red shirts against the military regime. As everything here this wasn't a bitter, aggressive or frustrated happening but a cheerful parade. After saying goodbye to my mom and Mariette, Meri and I left for Ko Samet, the island closest to Bangkok where we rested a few days at the most southern (and thus the quietest) point of the island named Ao Wai. Every day after breakfast however 2 speedboats full of Russians were dropped off here, who immediately ordered some beers and took some bikini model pictures of their wives at the beach, which brought us some funny entertainment. To conclude some remarks on Thai English: the Thai cannot pronounce many words in a correct way. For example they do not hear the difference between the r and the l. In Khao Yai our guide pointed towards a certain 'prant', by which he meant plant of course. Also many consonants after each other pose a problem. At a certain moment a waitress pronounced muesli as 'museli', immediately corrected by Meri: 'not museli but muesli, like Bruce Lee…'.

Chilling out on Ko Lanta

Going south: Krabi and Ko Phi Phi
From Krabi we were put in a sawing thaew direction of Ao Nang to get aboard of a speed boat. We sailed to Bamboo Island (be it another one than the one I visited before in Cambodia) where we got some time to explore the beach. Immediately a warning sign reminded you of the 2004 tsunami which wiped away almost the entire south coast of Thailand. After that to the famous Ma Ya Beach for the white beach, turquoise blue water and palm trees. We were however quite disappointed by this one: there was not a square meter empty on the beach and the water was saturated with sped boats. Apparently mass tourism had come together on this beach. We had lunch on Ko Phi Phi Don followed by a visit to some snorkeling spots where I could test and approve my newest toy (digital waterproof camera bought in Siam Square). At night in Krabi we paid a quick visit to the night market.
Bangkok's Atlanta Hotel
To stay in another quarter of Bangkok than Bang Lam Phu, we chose the Atlanta Hotel in Sukhumvit. This budget hotel was built in 1952 and still breaths the atmosphere from this period. The rooms are basic but the lobby, the restaurant and the jungle garden with swimming pool make up for that. For me personally this brought back many memories of 10 years ago when I visited Thailand for the first time with Jan, Stefan and Johan and we spent our first few nights in Bangkok. We walked past the shopping malls of Siam Square to Jim Thompson's House, where the American silk merchant and art collector rebuilt 6 houses in Thai architecture to one big dwelling - now a museum with textile shop next to it. In 1967 he went for a hike in the Malay highlands and was never seen again. In the evening we met Jo and Eva, who reached the end of their month of holiday in the south of Thailand, in the lobby of the Atlanta Hotel for an excellent dinner in the hotel restaurant.
